| Term | Meaning |
| Commodity code | The classification in the tax department’s / customs’ “Usage Tariff” needed for the goods to be imported. Also known as: “Import duties part II”. |
| Customs | Government department whose job is to check international goods flows entering, leaving or passing through the Netherlands (and hence the territory of the European Union). |
| Customs clearance | Completing the customs formalities for goods to be imported. |
| Customs clearance costs | Costs incurred by TNT Post for customs-clearing consignments and collecting customs duty, VAT and other import duties. The addressee is charged a contribution towards these costs. |
| Customs declaration (making a customs declaration) | Submitting for approval to customs a written or electronic customs declaration relating to the goods to be imported, exported and conveyed in transit. |
| Customs duty | Import duty payable on an article, charged when the article is imported. |
| Debt collection | Collection of the amounts owed. |
| EMS consignment | EMS stands for Express Mail Service, TNT Post’s express service. |
| European Union (countries in the EU) | Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom |
| Examination | Opening and carefully checking the consignment on the spot. |
| Fiscal VAT and/or excise area | Area within the European Union (EU) that is not part of the free area within the EU as regards the applicable VAT and/or excise. | VAT | Value Added Tax. |
